Why Child Abuse is a Serious Issue

Statistics

-A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.
-Almost five children die every day as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of four.
-90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% were abused by family members
-About 30% of abused neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse
-The estimated annual cost of child abuse and neglect in the united states is $104 billion
-Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely to abuse alcohol and 3.8 times more likely to develop an addiction to drugs

Here is a chart demonstrating the different types of child abuse and how common each one is

This is a really stunning on how much the child deaths have increased. Then again this only dates up to 07 so god knows how big the number is now. I think the reason why it increases is because of poverty.

 Essay

The history of Child Abuse goes all the way back to 1884. The first state to ever legislate protection for children was New York in the late 1800's. As the years progressed more and more states began to realize how much this was occuring. By 1970 all 50 states had their own laws for reporting child abuse. It used to be called battered children syndrome like it was some kind of disease. Today, there are places where families can go and try and work it out.
Facts say that younger women tend to be the perpetrator a lot of the time but not always. Also, child abuse can happen in any ethnic group. I would think that places with more poverty would have an increase in the amount of abuse reports. All the stress that the parents have to try and raise their child could completely go wrong after a while.
